Narrative Structure

Difference between story and narrative:
There is a fairly big difference between story and narrative, because a story has an ending, it also has a beginning middle and end, where as a narrative is open ended and allows the audience to think more about the ending themselves, rather than just telling the audience what happens, narrative allows them to use their imagination. The audience can also involve themselves more into a narrative when re telling the tale, as a narrative allows them to create their own ending, a story can only be told one way because it follows an order.
3 Act narrative structure:
1) Equilibrium - Introduces characters  relationships and where they live, also includes the beginning of the climax and shows characters having sense of realism and realising what it is they have to do to resolve the situation.
2) Disequilibrium - The main climax occurs (Exciting part), usually involves the characters learning new skills to solve the climax as well.
3) New Equilibrium - Everything is resolved, characters have usually mastered a new skill by the end of this, and have new relationships, and have achieved their goals.

5 act classic Hollywood structure:
1) Exposition
2) Development
3) Complications
4) Climax
5) Resolution
This is the structure that would be taken when creating a Hollywood film, as it adds more of a story, and makes the story more exciting, because it adds more detail.

Linear narrative structure - Events within a film or story that have a chronological order, and tell a story in a certain correct order (more common). Example - 'Frozen' follows a linear structure, as it follows a chronological order throughout the whole story, and has a straight forward beginning middle and end.
Non Linear narrative structure - Events within a film or story are presented in a non chronological order, and does not follow a direct pattern. Example - 'Kill Bill' follows a non linear narrative structure because it doesn't follow a chronological pattern, as it constantly keeps using flash backs into the past, therefore not following a specific pattern.
