"A story is not a synonym of a Narrative"

'A story' and 'A narrative' mean both different things, a story is the plot and what is happening within the film or written work, and a narrative is how the writer decides to tell the story, for instance is it told in voice over or can you see the speaker on the screen. The Agency is the key driver for the narrative, and make the decisions.

Examples:

!Analogue people in the digital age!

Story: The story is of the switchover which then escalates into the randomly chosen people extending the conversation onto new subjects such as UFO'S etc. It is also of the people in 'Johnny Walsh's bar' and their views of the switchover, It is also about people who were used to analogue, and them dealing with the switchover to digital.

Narrative: The narrative is an up close and first hand view of the people in 'Johnny Walsh's bar'. It is a non - chronological narrative as it is not in real time, they have gone into the bar took loads of footage, took parts of that footage and took some of it and turned it into a documentary.

Agency: The agency have chosen a location, told the people in that location of the switchover from analogue to digital and filmed the peoples responses.

!Inside the mind of Collin Furze!

Story: The story is of how Colin Furze created his inventions and also why he created his inventions. 

Narrative: The narrative is watching Colin Furze on his inventions and in his workshop describing what he does and how he does it.

Agency: The agency have gone to Colin Furze and asked him to describe on film how he created his inventions, why he created them and how he started.

!When the music turned deadly!

Story: The story is of how Jordan Davis was murdered, and of the suspects point of view on why he committed such a crime, and also a police description of what happened, so following Jordan's death.

Narrative: The narrative is of  a fact based police investigation of what happened to Jordan Davis, it is told using real footage and an interview of both Jordan's father describing his thoughts and feelings, and also the suspects interview at the police station.

Agency: The Agency have approached this using fact based investigations of the suspect, and interview with the victims father, and baby photos of Jordan, and showing real footage of the kids in the car at the time and place of the crime scene, They have also lit the father in the interview in an emotional manner adding an atmosphere to the documentary.
